A24 has scheduled Benny Safdie’s Mark Kerr combined martial arts biopic The Smashing Machine starring Dwayne Johnson for an October 3 launch.
The movie follows Kerr on the peak of his powers through the no-holds-barred period of the UFC, as he questions himself and struggles with life and his relationship with girlfriend Daybreak Staples, performed by Emily Blunt.
A24 produced and financed the movie and launched the bundle at Cannes final 12 months when Johnson flew in to satisfy worldwide consumers. There was speak about a possible awards play for the A-lister and star of movies just like the Quick And Livid movies, Jungle Cruise and the Moana franchise.
The corporate pounced on the October 3 date after it emerged that Lionsgate could also be rethinking the best way to launch its Michael Jackson biopic as a two-parter and push it from that date into 2026.
Safdie produces The Smashing Machine by way of his Out for the Rely, alongside Johnson, Dany Garcia and Hiram Garcia for Seven Bucks Productions, David Koplan and Eli Bush.
Former wrestler and combined martial artis Kerr was a two-time UFC Heavyweight Match Champion, and received quite a few different titles. In 2003 he was the topic of an HBO documentary titled The Smashing Machine.
