Portuguese function Manas and Dutch title Alpha. have received the primary two prizes from the unbiased Giornate degli Autori sidebar in Venice.
Marianna Brennand Fortes’ Manas took the Director’s Award, chosen by The Memento director Joanna Hogg’s jury. Set in Brazil’s Amazon rainforest, the movie follows a 13-year-old lady who decides to confront the oppressive system that controls her household and the ladies of their neighborhood.
The movie is backed by Walter Salles and the Dardenne Brothers, and produced by Fortes for Portugal’s Fado Filmes. The movie receives a €20,000 (£16,865) money prize, to be divided equally between Fortes and gross sales agent Bendita Movie Gross sales.
Jan-Willem van Ewijk’s Alpha. took the Europa Cinemas Label for finest European movie within the part, awarded by a jury consisting of European exhibitors Daira Aboliņa, Antonio Costa Valente, Andrea Porta and Jana Trnkova.
