On June 7, 1998, in a criminal offense that shocked the nation and led to stronger state and federal hate crime legal guidelines, James Byrd Jr., a 49-year-old Black man, was hooked by a series to a pickup truck and dragged to his dying in Jasper, Texas. (Two white males had been later sentenced to dying and executed for the crime; a 3rd was sentenced to life in jail.)
